10 Handy Substitutes for Baking Powder
Running out of baking powder mid-recipe might be frustrating, but there are several easy substitutes. Ten baking powder alternatives:
1. Baking Soda + Acid
Instead of 1 teaspoon of baking powder, mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar or vinegar.
2. Yogurt or Buttermilk
Instead of 1 teaspoon of baking powder, use 1/4 cup of buttermilk or yoghurt. Change the amount of liquid in the recipe as needed.

This recipe calls for 1 teaspoon of baking powder, but you can use 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda instead.
4. Plain Carbonated Water
To make leavening, swap out the liquid in your recipe for plain fizzy water.

Like plain fizzy water, club soda can be used to give baked goods more lift.
6. Whipped Egg Whites
Whip the egg whites until they make stiff peaks. Then, fold them into the batter to give it more volume and lift.

You can use self-rising flour instead of regular flour and baking powder because it already has baking powder in it.

Before you use it instead of baking powder, mix 1 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice and let it sit for 5 minutes.

For every teaspoon of baking powder, mix 1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda.
10. Beer or Wine
You can add carbonation and leavening by replacing some of the water in your mix with beer or wine.
